Un destacado psiquiatra de Estados Unidos describe la medicina transgénero como una "locura"

El Dr. Paul McHugh es uno de los mayores críticos de los principios de la medicina transgénero. Fue Director del Departamento de Psiquiatría y Psiquiatra en Jefe del Hospital Johns Hopkins entre 1975 y 2001. Aparte de su investigación, ha escrito varios artículos y libros destinados a un público más amplio, y formó parte del consejo de bioética del presidente Bush.

McHugh adoptó una una posición muy clara desde los inicios del debate transgénero. En 1979 puso fin a la cirugía de reasignación de género en el Hospital Johns Hopkins. Hace un par de años, fue coautor de un artículo de 143 páginas sobre género y sexualidad publicado en The New Atlantis, el cual fue fuertemente criticado por académicos LGBT.

En la década de 1990, McHugh se dedicó activamente a desacreditar el concepto de "recuerdos recuperados", noción según la cual las personas podrían recordar de manera repentina y espontánea el abuso sexual sufrido en la infancia.

McHugh todavía trabaja a tiempo completo en Johns Hopkins, aunque pronto cumplirá 90 años. Esta semana, la revista en línea Public Discourse publicó una larga entrevista con él sobre su carrera, con especial foco en el desafío de la medicina transgénero, de la cual extractamos los siguientes pasajes:

Creo que hay una especial devoción de los psiquiatras por descubrir secretos, y cada quien quiere tener su propio secreto mágico. Si alguien viene y te dice: "Aquí hay un maravilloso secreto oculto que te revelará la naturaleza del mundo y la naturaleza de la humanidad", a la larga suele ser una tontería. Pero suele atraer a personas que no tienen capacidad para verdaderos desarrollos propios. Finalmente, se trata de una especie de becerro de oro; bajas de la montaña trayendo algo trascendente, y ¿qué los encuentras haciendo? Bailando alrededor del becerro de oro...

Estoy asombrado por la cantidad de poder y recursos que estas ideas han obtenido, con el gobierno, la ley e incluso las organizaciones médicas respaldándolas. Pero estoy absolutamente convencido de que esto es una locura y va a colapsar, al igual que se derrumbó el mito de la eugenesia, que como se sabe llegó a ser igualmente poderosa. Me tranquiliza saber que no todos los psiquiatras adherimos a ese tipo de teorías. Afortunadamente Adolf Meyer, mi predecesor en Johns Hopkins, fue uno de los pocos psiquiatras del mundo que dijo en su momento: "No considero que debamos acompañar al movimiento eugenésico". Y por eso siento que estoy en buena compañía al decir que esto va a colapsar.

Va a colapsar, en particular en relación con el daño sobre la niñez, porque estas personas ya están comenzando a tener evidencias de que la orientación que se les dio era equivocada. En Gran Bretaña, el caso de Keira Bell, que acaba de ser presentado ante el Tribunal Superior, reconoce que el enfoque psiquiátrico adoptado fue muy inadecuado y que resultó determinante de los daños que hoy sufre esta niña. Esto es lo que se viene. Y lo que va a suceder en mi opinión, al menos con los jóvenes, los menores de veintiún años, será que se incrementen las demandas y tengamos nuevos juicios.

Puedo decirte cómo será el curso de los acontecimientos. Sabes que esa persona se despertará a los veinticinco años y se dará cuenta de que hay cosas que no cierran. Ha tenido varias mutilaciones en el cuerpo, es infértil y nos va a decir: "¿Cómo dejaste que esto suceda?" Y entonces los padres van a decir: "Bueno, el médico dijo ..." Entonces van a plantear: "Demandemos a los médicos". Van dirigirse a los médicos y decirles "¡¿Por qué hicieron esto ?!" Y los médicos responderán: "Ese era un tratamiento estándar para las personas transgénero", y la persona dirá: "¡Pero ya ves, yo no era transgénero, era una niña!" Y van a decir: "Santo cielo, tienes razón, en la infancia no podemos decir quién es transgénero, en verdad". Y luego las compañías de seguros van a entrar en escena y mucha gente va a ver lesionada su reputación. Pero lo más grave es que el saldo será un alto número de pacientes dañados.
